(view larger) | Early Gallé vases from the 1890s have steadily gained in popularity over the last few years. This example is fine and very typical of the period. The artwork is hand-painted and fired enamel on a clear, pale amber body. There is no acid-etching, which is the technique that is used on most of the later vases. The signature is hand-engraved on the underside "E. Gallé Nancy". Nancy is the name of the town in France where the factory began. Attractive, diminutive size at 6¼".
