Frederick Stuart Church (F.S. Church), Louis Icart, Pal Fried and Andre Gisson painted beautiful, elegant women. Their work spans most of the 20th century. Frederick Stuart Church began painting at the end of the 19th century and continued into the beginning of the 20th century, mostly in New York. His paintings are the essence of Art Nouveau. His pretty women are painted in harmony with nature and animals. Frederick Stuart Church is one of my favorite artists.

Louis Icart's work follows Church. He was most prolific during the Art Deco period, 1920-1939, in Paris. As well as the many etchings that he produced, he also enjoyed painting in oil. His paintings were more impressionistic than his etchings. He went through several painting periods, starting with the "Red Period" and ending with the "White Period". His love of women shows through in most of his work.

Pal Fried and Andre Gisson painted in the second half of the 20th century. Most of their work dates from 1950-1980. Fried painted elegant women in the streets of Paris, beautiful nudes, horse races, cowboys and an occasional scenic painting, settling finally in New York. Interesting, excellent quality paintings are available and still reasonably priced. Click on Pal Fried biography.

Andre Gisson traveled to Paris after WWII and studied there, painting many lovely Parisian street scenes, always in the impressionist style. The majority of his paintings are set outdoors. His home in Lake Mahopac, NY, surrounded by beautiful countryside, became the perfect venue for many of his paintings. Later the beaches near his home in Westport, CT became a favorite subject. Floral still lifes were another part of his oeuvre. As his wife was an avid gardener, he was always surrounded by lovely flowers and trees which appeared in many of his paintings. Andre Gisson (Anders Gittleson) died on July 28, 2003 at 81 years of age. His works are widely collected including the Smithsonian Institution and the Triton Museum of Art in North Carolina. His paintings are attractively priced now and highly likely to appreciate significantly due to his fairly recent death. I’ve watched the value of paintings by artists such as Johann Berthelsen and Guy Wiggins appreciate significantly in recent years. In my opinion, Andre Gisson deserves to be equally recognized. He was too talented to be ignored for long. March 2006 update. Gisson prices are accelerating. On March 1, 2006, Christie´s New York sold a 24" x 36" painting for $10,800. (Thanks to Tony Winston at gisson.com for much of this information.)

American illustration art is another area that has interested me for many years. Although the prices of American illustrator paintings have gone up substantially in recent years, there are still many high quality paintings available by lesser known artists that are still reasonably priced. Those are the paintings that I seek out.
