Figure 468. Lilies is a famous and very popular image. It's one of the few etchings that Icart lacquered to create a richer tone, especially in the blacks. The Japanese folding screen in the background was one of his favorite backdrops. Figure 474. Unframed. This is called a "first state" etching. It's what the artist sees just after doing his work on the copper plate. There is no color. It is used by the artist to see if any changes need to be made to the etching. It's quite rare. The final etching has minor differences (shown above). Irregular margins.
