Dutch Winter was a favorite motif of Daum. The decoration is available on a multitude of sizes and shapes. It is not rare, but it is uncommon and desirable. The artistry and color vary from example to example. This one has particularly nice color and detail.

I rarely know the provenance of anything I sell, but I do on this item. It is from The Glass Collection of King Frederik VIII of Denmark. You can't beat that. It measures 5¼" square and is signed in black enamel DAUM NANCY, plus the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

Daum Impressionist vases are rare and desirable. This example has exceptionally strong and pretty colors, with white birch trees against a strongly colored background, shading from deep purple to bright green. The acid-etching is particularly sharp. Add a great footed shape, with a turned-in rim, to the mix and you have one really fine vase. Nice size at 7½" tall. Signed. Mint condition. (There are a few tiny open bubbles along the foot rim, original to the making, and only mentioned for accuracy.)

This is a particularly nice example of Daum's winter decoration, with excellent color and decoration. The shape is called a bucket salt and is very desirable. Signed. Mint condition.

Datura grows in the Chihuahuan, Sonoran and Mojave deserts at elevations ranging from 1000 to 6500 feet. It also grows in France or Daum Nancy would not have used it as decoration on this vase.

The flower is colorful and showy, making this a beautiful vase. But what really stands out is the extensive gilding. The techniques were acid-etching (for the outline of the flowers and geometric designs), hand-painted enameling (for the color and detail in the flowers and leaves) and gilding (for the considerable border decorations at the top and bottom). Together they make for a very special vase. 

Perfect gilded signature underneath Daum Nancy, together with the Cross of Lorraine. (Frequently the signature is gilded if there is gilding on the vase. After all, the artist was already holding the paint brush with gold, so it was easy.)

At 12" tall, it's really impressive. You would expect considerable wear on the gilding for a vase 120 years old, but there's very little. It's museum-quality for the best collections.

Violets are one of the best flowers for Daum Nancy glass. The stronger the color, the better. This example has really great color and detail, but to top it off, it's a very rare perfume bottle, with the original stopper. Unfortunately, many Daum bottles do not have the original stoppers. This one has the matching acid-etched and enameled violets flowers, so there's no doubt about its originality.

At 6" tall, its a very desirable rarity. Signed in cameo on the side of the bottle DAUM NANCY, together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

For those of you who don't know, padding and wheel-carving are difficult techniques requiring the most skilled of craftsmen. The orange glass for the fruit was applied when the glass was molten. On cooling, the shapes of the leaves and signature were first acid-etched. Then all of the detail of the leaves and fruit were hand-carved by a master craftsman. This superb example shows the color and detail that can be achieved by these very sophisticated techniques.

The shape is one of the best you can ask for in Daum Nancy, with pulled tips and notches in the rim. At 9" tall, it's the perfect cabinet size.

The signature DAUM NANCY, together with the Cross of Lorraine, is acid-etched on the side of the vase, toward the bottom. The condition is mint, like the day it left the factory. The vase is museum-quality, for the best collections.

Daum Blackbird miniature vases are very rare and desirable. This miniature tumbler is especially nice, with great color, detail and lots of blackbirds. 1¾" tall. Signed DAUM NANCY, together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

The quality in this Daum vase is truly superior. There are four gorgeous gentian violet flowers (two on each side) on a pale blue mottled background.  Each flower was applied with molten glass and then hand-carved by a craftsman after the vase was cold. It's a technique used only on the best vases, as it was time-intensive and could only be done by the most skilled craftsmen. The effect is to make the flowers intensely colored and realistic. 8¾" tall. Engraved signature on the side. Mint condition.

Daum made tumblers in several sizes, this example being the largest at 5" tall. The flower is sweetpea and its lovely pastel flowers are sweet. Acid-etched signature DAUM NANCY on the side, together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

Daum didn't produce many squares or rectangles, so the shape is moderately rare and quite desirable. This lovely example, 5½" tall, has vivid orange-red leaves on a yellow mottled background. It's signed in cameo on the side of the vase DAUM NANCY, together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

Daum mushroom vases are special and technically sophisticated because multiple techniques were used to produce them. First the vase was acid-cut. Then the mushrooms were wheel-carved to give them intricate detail. Finally they were hand-painted with glass enamel paints and fired. Mushroom vases are one of the very few Daum vases that are both wheel-carved and enameled.

Additionally this vase has a big bonus of two added handles. It's museum quality for the BEST collections. Very nice cabinet size at 6" tall. Partially effaced black enamel signature on the underside, "Daum Nancy" together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

You couldn't ask for much better decoration than swans for a Daum Nancy vase. This magnificent version has three swans, each facing differently. The detail, color and contrast are truly outstanding. You can't tell the size from the photo because there's no point of reference, but it's fairly large, measuring 6¼" tall x 7½" diameter. Black enamel signature underneath DAUM NANCY, together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition. For the best collections!

Daum Farm scenes are rare and highly collectible. This particular example has more going for it than usual. First it was painted by Daum's best artist, whose initials are B.S. (click here for more about B.S.) The artwork is fantastic. Second, it's a nice, big size at 13¾". Third, it has impeccable provenance from the collection of King Frederik VIII of Denmark and thence by descent. That's something I don't get to say very often.

Signed in enamel on the side of the vase DAUM NANCY B.S., together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition. It's the best quality for the best collections.

Daum Peacock Feather vases are special as the two blue colors of the feather centers were applied with molten glass, a technique called padding. They were then pressed into the glass on a table called a marver. It's similar to the marquetry technique in glass. It was a difficult technique, so you know the quality is very high. And what's more Art Nouveau than peacock feathers?  This is a wonderful example.  Nice big size at 11¾" tall.  Signed.  Mint condition.

Wheel-carving is a technique that only the finest craftsmen were capable of, as it required great skill and intensive labor. But the results were always superb with details only possible with this technique.

This example is Daum at its finest. It's totally wheel-carved from top to bottom, with exquisite work in the flowers and leaves, as well as a martelé-textured background. Once you add two martelé handles, you raise the level to museum-quality.

Cranes are very rare and desirable subject matter for Daum vases. This example is really special, with exquisite detail for the cranes and rising sun. The techniques are acid-etching, hand-painted enameling and gilding, which all make for one great vase. The footed shape is elegant. The vase has a beautiful enamelled-only pine tree scene. That's lovely, but the shape is killer, with folded rims. It's one of the best and rarest shapes. It measures 6¾" tall and is signed on the underside in black enamel DAUM NANCY, plus the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

You'd be hard-pressed to find another example of this gorgeous shape. I guess the King knew what he was doing.

Daum Nancy Winter vases are not rare as they were very popular when they were new. That popularity still exists today, making them very desirable.

This example is exceptional, with superb detail, color and contrast. The shape is elegant and rare. Daum Winter examples don't get much better.

Wild orchids are wonderful subject matter for Daum Nancy. The better examples, like this one, are accompanied by spider webs in the background. What brings an example to the next level is gilding. This example has beautiful, unworn, gilding around the foot rim. The color and contrast are superior.

Tulips have always been desirable subject matter for Daum Nancy vases, mostly because they're so beautiful in nature. This vase uses multiple techniques to make for an especially lovely, colorful example.

The flowers are both acid-etched and hand-painted enameled, so the details are splendid. Additionally there is extensive gilding in the band above the mid-section, the top and bottom rims, and the details in the leaves. This additional technique raises the level of beauty and sophistication.

Animals are very rare subject matter for Daum. This example is splendid, with a rooster, the rising sun and flowers. The artwork and detail are exemplary, with techniques including acid-etching, hand-painted enameling and gilding.

As you probably know, Rain is one of the most desirable of all decorations that Daum Nancy produced. This wonderful example is exceptional because of the great color and detail. It measures 4¼" square, is signed, and in mint original condition. (The pointed edge is original to the day it was made by Daum. Guaranteed!)

Daum liked wild orchids, so they produced it on a variety of shapes and sizes. It's a very pleasing subject matter. What makes one example better than another is the presence of spider webs (some examples don't have them) and insects (most don't have them). This example has both spider webs and a bee, so it's head and shoulders better than similar examples. Daum wanted to make realistic scenes, so notice the transition from the sky to the dark ground. The color is strong and the detail superb.

It's a mini vase, at 2¾", so it's for people who like smaller examples. It's from The Glass Collection of King Frederik VIII of Denmark, one of about 10 items I purchased from the collection. Bleeding hearts are lovely flowers that I grow in my shade garden. They are depicted beautifully on this Daum Nancy miniature tumbler. The colors of the flowers contrast splendidly with the pinks, oranges and yellow mottling in the background. It's a really special example. 2" tall. When a flower has been padded and wheel-carved, it means that it was applied when the glass was molten. On cooling, the details were hand-carved by a master craftsman. This superb example shows the color and detail that can be achieved by these very difficult and sophisticated techniques.

This example has beautiful blue berries and green leaves, all with the detail that is only possible with wheel-carving. Additionally, there are two handles that were applied when the glass was molten. They only add to the beauty and sophistication of this important, museum-quality vase.

I recently acquired this special Daum Nancy box with applied and wheel-carved insects and cabochons. It's a very sophisticated box with multiple, labor-intensive, techniques utilized in its manufacture.

First the box cover and lid were formed by the gaffer, followed by layering with colored powders (for the leaves and background) in a technique called vitrification, making the lid, especially, look like the floor of the forest. This was followed by the application of colored metal foil to the surface beneath each insect and cabochon. Each piece of foil was then  covered with a dollop of clear molten glass. 

After cooling, the box was given to the carver, who hand-engraved the detail into the three insects and two cabochons. They appear to be colored because of the refraction of light coming from the colored foil underneath. They are actually clear glass. Finally he hand-engraved the signature on the underside. 

It's a gorgeous, important box, for the best collections. Nice size at 4½" square. Excellent condition.

If you collect Daum Nancy glass, you know how rare and desirable Blackbird decoration is. This example comes on a very rare shape with a scalloped rim. The detail, color and workmanship are superior. It measures 6" diameter, so it's substantial. Black, hand-painted, enamel signature underneath, Daum Nancy, together with the Cross of Lorraine.

The broken egg is one of the most desirable Daum Nancy shapes. I thought it only came in three sizes from miniature to 3½", until I found this rarity. It's 6½" tall and decorated with a truly fabulous birch tree and lake scene. The colors and details are superb, making for an exceptional vase. Signed "DAUM NANCY", the Cross of Lorraine and the artist's initial "S". Mint condition.

It's hard to tell the size from the photo, but this is a big, heavy, impressive 11" tall, bulbous vase. It's very colorful with bright red, yellow and green flowers, as well as internal red swirls. A lone butterfly adds to the rarity and desirability of the vase. The technique is acid-etching, yielding a volcanic surface referred to as vitrified. Bleeding hearts are beautiful flowers that bloom in early spring. They're beautiful in person and just as beautiful as depicted on this vase. The colors and workmanship are truly superior. Add to the mix the monumental size of 13¾" and you have an important vase. It's rare to get such fine acid-etching and enameling on a Daum vase of this size. Most examples are much smaller. Signed in cameo on the side of the vase. Mint condition.

Rain is one of the most desirable of all Daum Nancy decorations. Good color, contrast and detail make one example better than another. Pink in the background is especially desirable and this example has plenty. The rain is enameled, rather than acid-etched, making the colors stronger. It's a dynamite tumbler. Enamel signature on the underside DAUM NANCY, the initials of the artist HF, and the Cross of Lorraine. 4¾" tall. Mint condition.

I'm not a botanist, but I believe this beautiful flower is solanaceae, more commonly known as nightshade. Daum did not depict this flower very often, but it always made for splendid decoration. This example is especially fine with gilded details and a beautiful background that shades to yellow with green mottles at the bottom. The shape is very desirable, a flattened pitcher with an applied handle. Nice cabinet size at 5" tall. Gilded signature underneath, "Daum Nancy", together with the Cross of Lorraine.

Daum Nancy produced a number of vases with wild orchids. Sometimes they have spider webs and sometimes not. This example has both spider webs and a bee. It makes it a very desirable rarity with stunning colors. Lovely shape. Nice cabinet size at 6". Gilded signature underneath, "Daum Nancy", together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

Daum produced a series of vases with scenes on one side and flowers on the other. This example has a Dutch scene with windmill hand-painted on one side in black (called en grisaille painting). On the other side we find the national flower of The Netherlands, the tulip, done in the more traditional acid-etched and hand-painted enamel style. Additionally the details in the leaves were gilded, making this a sophisticated and beautiful vase. Nice cabinet size at 7¾". Gilded signature on the underside. Mint condition.

One has to be careful buying Daum perfume jars. Many times the stopper has been lost or broken. The replacements are usually frosted glass, with no decoration.

This example has exquisite work in the acid-etched and enameled poppies, buds and leaves. The stopper is matching, with acid-etched and gilded decoration. The top and bottom rims are also gilded.

This is a little beauty -- rare and gorgeous. 3¼" tall. Engraved and gilded signature "Daum Nancy" underneath. Mint condition except for some extremely minor roughness on the foot rim (unimportant and only mentioned for accuracy).

Daum Nancy Alpine scenic vases are quite rare, so I don't often get the opportunity to purchase one. This is a special example, with a village nestled in the foothills of beautiful mountains, probably the Swiss Alps. Daum artists painted what was close and familiar and the Alps were not very far from the home of Daum in Nancy, France. What this vase lacks in size (4"), it makes up for in quality and rarity. Enamel signature underneath, "DAUM NANCY", together with the Cross of Lorraine. Mint condition.

Every once in a while I have the pleasure of being able to offer a really special vase for sale. This Daum vase qualifies. The workmanship is exceptional. The daffodils and buds were padded (applied molten) and then wheel-carved by hand when the vase was cold. There are two daffodils and two buds, slightly different colors on opposite sides.

What also makes the vase wonderful is the rare and beautiful shape, flattened, multi-lobed, with an applied foot. It doesn't get much better than this. Nice size at 6½" tall. Beautiful hand-carved signature on the foot. Mint condition.

Dutch Winter is a scene that Daum produced on many different shapes. This miniature vase, 1¾" tall, is a lovely example. The detail and color are exceptional and the bulbous shape is lovely, allowing a larger scene. Signed. Mint condition.

There are certain Daum Nancy decorations that are both beautiful and rare. Prairie decoration is one of them. It's exceptionally  rare, pretty and desirable, with a field of exquisitely hand-painted flowers. In 45 years of business, I can name the Prairie vases I've owned on one hand.

The colors and workmanship vary from example to example. This pitcher has great color and detail, with lots of pink mottling in the background. The decoration is very busy and continues around the entire circumference. The fact that it's a pitcher makes it even better because it has a gilded applied handle.

Certain Daum subject matter is both rare and desirable. Bees are one of them. This important vase is completely covered with bees and flowers, as well as beautiful gilded decoration on the foot and top rim. It's a honey of a vase (Oh, I like a good pun). Nice size at 9" tall. This exciting Daum blue floral vase is very sophisticated. The glass was layered when it was molten, first with a deep blue layer, then with a pale green layer. When the vase was cold it went through the standard acid-etching process, which revealed the flowers and leaves. What makes it special is what happened next. All of the flowers, buds and background were wheel-carved. This required a highly skilled craftsman who spent hours creating the incredible detail which is only possible with wheel-carving. It's a masterpiece. Nice big size at 12" tall and bulbous. Fancy engraved signature along the foot rim. Mint condition.

This Daum Nancy vase was blown with a cerulean blue layer over a lavender layer. The extraordinary colors were revealed by wheel-carving, giving great details to the flowers and the background. Wheel-carving required highly skilled craftsmen who spent hours creating the wonderful details. Nice big size at 11¼" tall and bulbous. Fancy engraved signature along the foot rim. Mint condition.

Is this cool or what? Rooster decoration is a real rarity in Daum and this example is special, with beautiful artistry, great detail and gilding. On the back in enamel is the saying "Je Chanteclare", which means "I Chanteclare", the name of the rooster in the tale of Reynard the Fox. Not only is the decoration fantastic, but the two applied handles make it even better. 4½" tall. Daum Blackbird vases are quite rare and desirable. I get only one or two  a year, so I was very pleased when I was offered this lovely, diminutive example, 3¾" tall. The color, detail and workmanship are superior, with excellent contrast and blackbirds all around the vase. Signed in enamel underneath "Daum Nancy", together with the Cross of Lorraine. Daum Nancy depictions of Fall scenery are always a joy. This example is especially fine, with an internal swirl of chartreuse that sweeps around the entire vase, giving it real depth.
