Daum Nancy, Cyclamen Vase

Daum Nancy Nancy liked to use cyclamen flowers for many of their vases. Makes sense. They're beautiful. This example take the level of sophistication way up because all of the detail int he flowers and background is hand-carved. The technique is called wheel-carving or intaglio-cutting. Only the finest craftsmen had the skill to pull it off successfully. Wheel-carving results in a level of detail that is impossible with acid-etching. The same technique was used to create the martelé texture in the background. Then to add to the sophistication, green handles were applied when the glass was molten, and even they were partially wheel-carved with martelé texture. Even the signature underneath, DAUM NANCY, together with the Cross of Lorraine, is a work of art. It was hand-engraved by the same carver and then gilded to make it stand out. At 9½" tall, it's the perfect cabinet size. Museum quality for the best collections.
