Other Makers, Austrian erotic bronze
ITEM # 2409020
Austrian erotic bronzes are usually very amusing and this example is no exception. To the casual viewer, it's a lady relaxing with a cigarette. On closer inspection, she is hinged, and very revealing. Diminutive size at 4" long x 2½" wide x 1¾" tall. Unsigned. Excellent condition with original paint.

I just sold this model last year and was lucky enough to acquire another one this year. Carl Kauba was Austrian, but he was totally enamored with the American West. His bronzes are close to the quality of American sculptors Remington and Russell, but at a fraction of the price. Kauba bronzes frequently are polychromed, which wasn't done by Remington or Russell. This example of an Indian in a canoe is moderately rare and shows nice polychrome in his headdress. 10" long. Signed. Excellent condition.

I love Carl Kauba Indian bronzes. It's amazing how an Austrian sculptor who probably never visited the US could make such great bronzes equal in quality (but not price) to the wonderful bronzes of American sculptors Remington and Russell. Isn't she beautiful, reveling in joy, with a cluster of grapes in one hand? It's the epitome of joie de vivre. The sculptor was Clare Sheridan, English, done at the turn of the last century. Great size at 22", with a fabulous original green patina. Signed. Excellent condition, with some minor scuffs along the base.

Does it get any cuter than this wonderful French bronze by Hans Stoltz Lerche? It's also wonderful that the children are finished in gold and the rest of the vase has a beautiful bronze patina. Signed in the bronze at the base "St. Lerche" plus the impressed French foundry seal. 6¼" tall. Excellent condition.

Frederick MacMonnies was one of America's great sculptors, with important examples in every major museum. This example is Pan of Rohallion, with a great original patina. Very desirable 1890 French casting by H. Rouard. 14¾" tall.

Frederick MacMonnies, 1863-1937, was one of America's finest expatriate scultors. He was as famous in France as he was in the USA. His work is on exhibit at every major museum in the US including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This lovely model, Pan of Rohallion, was cast in France, and comes in several sizes, this being the smallest at 10½". It's signed "F. MacMonnies 1890", together with the foundry seal of E. Gruet. The condition is excellent with a rich patina.

I love inkwells and this is one of the coolest I've had in a long time. What's better subject matter than a mermaid and an octopus? One of the details in particular is of note. The mermaid has two fins. Whaaat? When do you ever see that? Then look at the octopus. He's got human-type teeth. It's wonderfully whimsical. The German mark underneath is GESCHUTZ, meaning copyrighted. Therefore the origin is either Germany or Austria and the date is circa 1900. The metal is bronze and the background is a mirror that is meant to simulate water. It's a killer inkwell, 9" wide and in excellent condition, with the original patina. It won't last long, so let me know if it's for you.
